About Our Center

Another View of Our Meditation Hall

The Northfield Buddhist Meditation Center (NMBC) is a group committed to encouraging one another in the practice of Buddhist meditation. We welcome anyone interested in the practice of meditation, regardless of religious background or affiliation.

Although most meditation centers are rooted in a particular tradition within Buddhism, the NMBC does not claim affiliation with any particular form of Buddhist practice. We welcome practitioners from all Buddhist traditions, as well as those who are simply interested in the practice of meditation. Our dharma speakers, class topics, and library materials represent a variety of Buddhist practice and thought, including Theravadan, Zen, Vipassana, and Tibetan traditions.

At the same time, we find that many individuals profit from practicing within a specific tradition. For this reason, we support these practitioners with special speakers and events. We also encourage those who wish to go further in their practice to seek out a teacher, and we can provide contacts with specific teachers and resources in the Twin Cities area.

Please check the home page or the schedule page for more information.

In addition, we offer these other ways to deepen your practice or lean more about Buddhist meditation and philosophy:

  • Regular introductory sessions in Buddhist meditation
  • A regular schedule of discussion groups, classes, and retreats
  • A lending library of books, periodicals, tapes, and compact discs

A listing of upcoming events is posted on our home page.

Supporting the Northfield Buddhist Meditation Center

The Northfield Buddhist Meditation Center offers its programming on a system of Dana. The Buddhist tradition of Dana (Pali for “generosity”) asks that people look into their hearts and determine for themselves how they want to contribute to their community. We have never required a certain financial contribution to participate in our activities, and have left that decision to participants, according to their own sense of generosity and means. We ask for people to look into their hearts and decide how they want to support our Center based on what the Center means to them and what they can afford to contribute. The Center depends on this generosity to support the teachings and our place of refuge, which we are so fortunate to have. The Center does have non-profit status with the State of Minnesota and all contributions are tax deductible.

Dana baskets are available at the center for cash contributions. You may also contribute online using the purple “Just Give” link above.

In addition to financial support, there are other opportunities to participate in this practice of generosity by helping to clean the Center, providing refreshments for events, making posters, and more.
