Buddha, Bodhisattva, or Suffering Being: A Buddhist Look at Jesus, Lisa Ebert

While Buddhists have not traditionally held any particular view of Jesus, growing dialogue between Buddhists and Christians has moved such prominent Buddhist leaders as the Dalai Lama and Thich Nhat Hanh to speak and write about Jesus. Also, as Buddhism has spread in the West many Christians (or those from Christian backgrounds) have begun to practice Buddhist meditation. In this session, we will examine how Jesus might be regarded within the framework of Buddhist practice and thought. We will also explore how a Buddhist understanding of Jesus might challenge and expand Christian thought. Ms. Ebert, a practicing Buddhist and former Christian minister and theologian, will also discuss how she now understands Jesus within her own spiritual life.

This presentation was originally developed and presented for Westminster Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis, MN as part of their educational programming.

Lisa Ebert lives and works in Northfield, where she serves as Practice Advisor at the Northfield Buddhist Meditation Center. She practices and studies within the Theravadan Buddhist or Vipassana/Insight meditation tradition, and is currently a participant in the Integrated Study and Practice Program at the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies. She received her M.Div. and S.T.M. degrees from Yale University. Previously, she has led congregations in the United Church of Christ, served as a college chaplain, and taught college and graduate courses in Christian theology, history of Christian thought, and science and religion.
